A Conversation with your Computer
 

See that mouse and that keyboard in front of you right now?  For most of us - in just a few short years - they will both disappear.  The interface between man and machine will evolve to become the spoken voice.  The computer, if we think of the computer as a PC, will disappear as well.  It will be replaced by very powerful micro-processors and micro-storage systems - embedded in 3' x 5' (or smaller) flat LCD screens mounted on the walls in several rooms within your home. The Internet will be totally wireless, and immensely intelligent and interactive.  You will have your own personal avatar as your primary conduit to the knowledge and activities that the Internet now contains.

Let's focus on a technology which will hatch in just a year or two - the Intelligent Internet.  This next stage of computing and the Internet will mark the actual start of the intellectually symbiotic relationship between man and machine.

Information and communication technologies are rapidly converging to create computerized machines that understand us, do what we tell them to, and even anticipate our needs.  Advances in speech recognition, artificial intelligence, microchip processing speeds, virtual environments, and flat wall monitors are combining to producing a "conversational" human-machine interface.  These powerful trends will drive the next generation of information technology into the mainstream well before 2010. Rather than forcing us to hunch over a keyboard or push around a mouse - this Intelligent Internet will allow people everywhere to converse naturally and comfortably with life-sized, virtual "agents" while shopping, working, learning, and conducting most social relationships.

Before personalized robots are affordable ($10k - $15k because of the hardware) we will have much less expensive artificial intelligent "virtual agents" - that will be able to understand speech and return it. An efficient personal assistant, who would reside within your computer / internet, doesn't really need a body.  Artificial (machine) Intelligence will have 2 layers - an internal intelligence - which will be inexpensive because it is just processing power and software.  Later on - an outer skin will be put around this intelligence, giving birth to machine mobility and manipulation of human tools to take over the drudge work of humans, and to challenge our intellect.  This technology will be the robots, androids, and humanoids - all names for intelligent machines.  I predict we will be able to purchase affordable multi-function robotic maids by the year 2015.
